Photoquai 2009 This looks like a fantastic biennial focusing on non-western photography. The idea of showcasing non-western photography or even western/westernised countries and their struggle with first world identity seems like a well thought through curated brief.
I would love to see images from photographers from China, Japan, India, Central Asia, Africa, the list goes on.
Or… to curate a series of exhibitions of photographers unknown in Europe is great.
But which one is it? Maybe I am a little bit confused? Or the press release I got via twitter today is meant to mislead.
The last time I looked and was at home, Australia was a western country – so i am not sure as part of the Biennial Australian is part of the mix. If it was about non-western issues, immigration, identity etc, maybe at a stretch. But fantasy? How does that connect with the idea of non-western photography.
Showcasing talent from abroad – oh, I get it. I read that a bit further down so I didn’t come across as too negative.
But don’t sell me on the premise of non-western photography and then present something else. And get the message straight otherwise it doesn’t feel quite curated at all.
I expected so much more. And yes, I don’t consider Australia or Canada to be part of non-western mix.
22 September – 22 November 2009 in Paris. I am still considering going – any reason to go to Paris from London. But need to get over the press release and curatorial brief not meeting expectations.
